Chapter One
Leslie Evans clutched the strap of her bag and pulled her luggage to the side as people walked passed her. Too many people by her standards. She was not used to the crowds or the smells. New York was a whole different ballgame. One that was better experienced because none of the movies or books had prepared her for the reality that was the big apple. This wasn’t where she thought her life would go. Leslie tried to wrap her head around how she got here, New York with no plan in mind, no job, nowhere else to go but to a sister that she hadn’t spoken to in half a decade. Leslie sighed and reached into her pocket to pull out her phone. She’d waited until the last minute to call Charlie because she worried that her sister would have told her not to come. She figured if she was already in New York, Charlie wouldn’t turn her away. Was that desperate and dumb? She knew it was but she was a coward. Leslie dialed the number and heard the phone ring on the other end. She hoped Charlie would pick up.
“Please pick up. Please. I’ve got no other place to go.” Leslie whispered. The phone stopped ringing and went straight to voicemail. Leslie choked back a sob, took a deep breath and tried again, and again and again.
“Hello?” A grouchy voiced responded on the other end. Leslie melted in a puddle of relief. She wiped her eyes furiously and tried to steady her voice.
“Charlie? It’s Leslie. I know this is a lot to ask but can you come pick me up? I’m at Grand Central.” Leslie said quickly before she lost her nerve. She didn’t know whether or not Charlie would come. Things had ended badly with them the last time they saw each other. Charlie had cut her off.
“Leslie?” Charlie sounded so shocked. With good reason, Leslie hadn’t called since that last fight. She’d memorized Charlie’s number but she’d just never used it.
“Please Charlie. I have no where else to go.” Leslie felt the tears welling up in her eyes. She was not going to cry on the phone. She was not going to give in to the urge to just weep.
“Yes. I’ll be there. Just give me some time.” Charlie shocked her by saying.
“Thank…” Leslie started but Charlie had already dropped the call. Leslie stared at her phone wondering if she should call back. Charlie said she’d show up. Leslie had to try to trust that even though she had no reason to. She hadn’t given much of a reason to Charlie to bail her out of whatever mess she was in. If Charlie didn’t show up, she had a hundred dollars. That didn’t count for much in New York but maybe, and she was being immensely optimistic, but maybe it would be enough to find her footing. She sat on her luggage and watched the clock tick waiting for Charlie to show up. One hour. Good thing the city never slept. She was never short on people to watch. She leaned forward, dropping her head in her hands, taking a deep breath and trying to find some calm in all of this.
“Leslie?” Charlie’s voice dragged her from her downward spiral. Charlie came. Leslie looked up to find Charlie standing next to a handsome man she’d never seen before. The way the man stood protectively over her sister told her the nature of their relationship. This man, whoever he was, he cared about Charlie but from the way he stared at her, tipped her off he had yet to make up his mind about her. Leslie was okay with that. She had a lot to prove to both her sister and herself.
“You came. I didn’t think you would.” Leslie whispered, the feeling of relief made her dizzy.
“I know we have our problems but I will never not be there for you. Don’t you ever think that. I love you.” Charlie moves forward and knelt where her sister sat. The floor was sticky but she didn’t care. She took Leslie’s hands in hers and smiled through her tears.
“I’m sorry. I should have listened to you five years ago. I threw my future away and for what? I’m homeless, broke and I have no one. I came running back to you when the last thing I want to do is be a burden.” Leslie cried. She didn’t deserve her sister’s instant forgiveness.
“You will never be a burden to me. No matter what. I’m glad you’re here. We’ll get through this together. C’mon. Let’s get you out of here.” Charlie said.
Leslie dragged herself up and took her sister’s hand. She shot a quizzical glance at the man standing behind Charlie who had yet to say a word. Charlie caught her stare, blushed and grinned.
“That’s my boyfriend Damien. Damien this is Leslie my sister.” Charlie made the brief introduction.
“Hey.” Leslie said, completely at loss at what to say. Damien merely smiled at her and tipped his head in greeting. He took her luggage as Charlie took her bag. Together they walked out of the station into the bustling New York streets. She took a deep breath as Charlie stood beside her. Damien moved forward talking into his sleek black cellphone. Slowly a black town car made its way to where they all stood waiting. Leslie raised her brows in a silent question. Damien was loaded.
“Tech.” Charlie said by way of explanation.
“Ah. That explains his cellphone.” Leslie smiled in spite of herself.
“I have a sneaking suspicion that it contains the nuclear launch codes.” Charlie laughed but it wasn’t far from the truth.
“Only you would find a guy who probably works for the CIA.” Leslie teased.
“Hey. He’s amazing
.” Charlie smiled brightly.
“You love him. I can see that.” Leslie said wistfully.
“I do. We have a lot of catching up to do. You have a lot of explaining to do and you will when we get home. For now, I’m happy you’re here with me. That’s what counts.” Charlie grabbed her hands and squeezed.
“You ladies ready to go home or do we continue the reunion on the sidewalk.” Damien asked as he pulled the car door open.
“He’s bossy too.” Leslie chuckled.
“You don’t know the half of it.” Charlie chuckled.
Chapter Two
Leslie followed as Charlie led her into the spare bedroom. It wasn’t a huge space but the bed looked comfortable, Leslie sighed at how homey the entire place looked. She had taken her bag from Damien so she stowed it away in the closet and waited until Charlie wrapped up the tour.
“My room is just across from yours. There’s food in the fridge and you have your own bathroom so that shouldn’t be a problem. It’s the weekend so we’ll have a lot of time to catch up tomorrow but in the meantime shower, get some rest and I’ll get some food from the 24 hour Chinese place a few minutes away. It’s okay food but the better places will be closed right now.” Charlie sighed.
“Oh it’s no bother. I can probably get something to eat tomorrow morning. I’m not that hungry.” Leslie sighed. Not wanting to impose.
“Have you eaten all day?” Charlie asked with a lift of her eyebrow that suggested she already knew the answer to her question.
Leslie blushed when her stomach growled loudly in response to the question. What was food? She hadn’t eaten properly in three days. She’d only eaten a sad browning banana the day before. Charlie rolled her eyes at the sound.
“I guess that’s my answer.” She smiled.
Leslie watched as her sister left the room. She showered and got dressed in clean, less travel worn clothes. She’d barely gotten out of the shower when Charlie came back with steaming paper bags of food. The smell made Leslie’s mouth water. The sweet and sour pork, chicken lo mein and pot stickers called her name. She grabbed a plate and dug in, slurping up the delicious noodles as Charlie picked at her food. Leslie noticed that Damien hadn’t made an appearance.
“Where’s Damien?” Leslie asked.
“He went home. He thought we could use the privacy to talk about stuff. I’ll see him tomorrow. He’s offered to take us out to dinner. I hope you don’t mind that I agreed. I know I should have probably asked you first but he really just wants to get to know you.” Charlie said quickly. Leslie gaped at her sister in shock. A man who barely knew her had dragged his ass halfway across the crazy traffic the big apple was known for so he could come pick her up from the station. She was grateful to him for not making snap judgements on the train wreck she was.
“Of course I don’t mind. Are you kidding me? He seems like an amazing guy plus free food. What’s not to agree to?” Leslie asked lightly. Charlie smiled a little but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. Her brows were furrowed with a little frown that meant serious business. Leslie thought she’d get away with not explaining herself for the first night but it seemed that Charlie wanted to have the explanation right then. She considered asking for more time but she knew it wasn’t because she was tired, it was because she was embarrassed. It was better to rip it off like a bandaid. Yet she waited, like the coward she was, for Charlie to say something first.
“I know I told you to never speak to me again if you decided to stay with Jason. I know I said that but I didn’t expect you to take me quite so seriously. At first I was pissed. My sister wouldn’t listen to my advice. Then later I guess it was pride. I was right, you were wrong. Why couldn’t you just apologize? Why did I have to be the bigger person? The years just flew by and I was too proud to call.” Charlie hugged a pillow off the bed and closed her eyes in shame.
“It’s not your fault. I was stupidly stubborn too. I thought I was in love and I knew better than everyone else. Jason came along and swept me off my feet. When you gave me that ultimatum, I was angry. I thought you were selfish, that you were choosing to force my hand so you could get your way. You never liked Jason but as the years went on, I was too ashamed. What would you want with a screw up like me? So I left you alone. I heard that you’d moved to New York. That made me even more ashamed. You always said you would and you did. I shouldn’t have given up a chance to go to college for Jason. I should have listened to you when you said giving up my life like that was stupid. I thought I was in love, I thought I knew better but I was wrong. I left him. He stopped working. So I flipped burgers during the day and tended bar at night. During weekends I worked at this catering firm, doing all their events and stuff. He complained, he belittled my efforts and said I was never good enough. More than that, he took my savings. Then I came home to find him fucking some waitress he met at the place I worked. That was the last straw. I left immediately and came to New York. I didn’t know whether or not you’d take me in, but I had to leave. I thought maybe, I could redo my life. It’s crazy, I know, but twenty-five is a hell of a time to start over. Especially with all the baggage I’ve got but I have to start somewhere. I will never make the same mistakes again, be willing to give up everything for a man. I know I could never make up for what I did to us but I’m hoping you’ll give me a second chance to be your sister again.”
“Hey. You’re here. We’ll figure it out. Maybe I can talk to Celine at the library. I can’t promise you anything but maybe there’s a position for you there. We’re constantly expanding so maybe there’s something for you. You’ll always be my sister. No second chances needed. Get some sleep. We’ll deal with tomorrow as it comes.” Charlie whispered. She leaned towards the bed and softly kissed her baby sister’s forehead.
Leslie closed her eyes and smiled to herself. Her sister had found a good man who had been willing to go the distance for her. She wasn’t keen on getting a man but she’d often thought about what the perfect man would look like and how he would treat her. She sighed at the thought as she let her body relax. A picture of him slowly developed in her mind. He was tall, with tapered long limbs and muscles that curved gracefully down the length of his body. Leslie smiled at him and he smiled back, with his grey eyes warming at the sight of her. His hair glinted in the low light of the strange room, bright and white. She chuckled, what were the odds of finding a grey haired hottie? He merely smirked at her, like he knew something she didn’t. Leslie imagined she could touch him. He touched her. His hands, big and callused slid down her body. He leaned in, close enough for her to smell him, earth and sin. She gasped as his fingers trailed across her skin, leaving goosebumps in their wake. She was lost in the moment, her pussy wet and dripping at the powerful sight of him.
He leaned in and fused his lips to hers. His hands, glided to her chest. She moaned as he tugged against her nipples, pulling the hard pebbles in his fingers, twisting slowly, dragging her nerve endings until she moaned quietly for release. He smirked.
“I’ll give you what you want.” He whispered in her ear, the timbre of his voice sent a shiver through her.
Slowly, his hands moved lower on her body, lower still, until his fingers brushed against her drenched pussy. She arched her hips off the bed. His presence was overpowering, drenching her with his lust. His fingers found her, sliding into her wet flesh, twisting her engorged clit. She thrusted her hips, fucking herself harder against his fingers. Pleasure arched out from her finger tips all the way to her womb.
“That’s it little girl. That’s what I want to see. I want to see you come all over my fingers.”
Her pussy spasmed as his fingers made her body come alive. Harder, the touches became. Faster, until they drove her to the fine edge of insanity. Leslie moaned as she slid off the edge, coming harder than she ever had before. She gasped, her eyes popped open and she looked around wildly. Where was she? As she looked around she remembered she was in New York in Charlie’s apartment. Holy Shit! She had fallen asleep and woke up org
asming. Slowly she calmed herself down and as she drifted off to sleep again, she thought to herself how strange it was that she’d cum so hard at the thought of a man who didn’t exist while the man who did exist, who she’d dated for five years, had never come close to giving her that kind of pleasure. Breathing hard she remembered him in her dream. How could a dream have elicited such a reaction in her?
Chapter Three
Leslie faltered in her step behind Charlie. The weekend was over and though Charlie had offered her a few days to acclimatize before she took any huge steps, Leslie decided she’d wasted enough time. When Charlie had said a library she wasn’t expecting this.
“This is a library?” Leslie asked, looking incredulously at Charlie.
“Yup. A private one. Funded by the stupidly rich and famous for the community or at least it is now. Lowdown of the place? Celine, that’s Cel, is head librarian. She’s dating a patron of the library and ultimate badass Everett, to be fair I think they’re edging into the engagement territory any day now. Kennedy, Kay for short and seriously do not call her Kennedy, she’s not a fan of the name is dating the head of the library and owner’s son Asher Van der Meer. He’s a big shot writer but he’s really down to earth and he’s got a sick sense of humor to match Kay’s. Damien is a friend of Asher’s but we have a history. Maybe I’ll tell you one of these days.” Charlie laughed as she made way to the gorgeous building that looked like it belonged on some southern plantation not a New York suburb.
